How about Paul Morris? He is still alive? He must be 75 or something? Does he still announce in the arena, or retired for always? I loved his voice even if he still was used the same intone. He was the best.
Hi Michel- I just noticed this (since the site was reconfigured, this is a "new" section). My understanding is that Paul Morris is still around. I believe he "retired" from his public address announcing work when the Leafs moved to the ACC in the late '90s.
I loved his classic delivery announcing goals. Always the same cadence, regardless of which team scored. I actually preferred that to what we have today, where the "home" announcer for every team yells out the name of the scorer to try and rev up the fans. It was more tasteful in the old days! Thanks Michel.
Michael— I thought you might enjoy seeing this "colorization" I did of an old photograph of Charlie Conacher and the Leafs visiting Boston Garden in 1936. (I found the black-and-white original on the Boston Public Library's Flickr page.) It's rather shocking to see players and fans in such close proximity; that's not likely to happen again anytime soon!
Thank you for sending this note, Pete. ( I remember posting a while back on the subject of just how close the fans were to the players along the boards in the "olden days"!. Amazing...)
I will check out that photo. Glad you found the site!
Hi Michael, On the heels of Kaspars Daugevins shootout attempt, do you recall Rocky Saganiuk attempting the same thing on a penalty shot when he was with the Leafs? I have this memory of him trying it, but losing the puck before he reached the net. Am I crazy? Pat
I remember Rocky well, Pat, one of my favourite early '80s Leafs. I have to be honest...I do not recall the particular play you are recalling. Rocky was a buzz-saw on the ice and a dynamic little player, so I would not be shocked to find he tried a unique move on a penalty shot. I wonder if it is out there somewhere on "You Tube? (The Daugevins attempt was something, eh?)
I recently read in one of your profiles about Bruce Gamble that there was a time when he and Terry Sawchuck platooned in a game. That is the first I ever heard that. Do you have details? Thanks GRG
Off the top of my head, I don't recall that particular game, GRG. I know Bower was hurt off and on in that mid-'60s period and Gamble got his share of games. (He had one particularly outstanding shutout streak...I think I've written about that here before.) Do you mean Imlach actually intentionally had Sawchuk and Gamble share time (not an injury situation)?
My apologies for not recalling that post- I'm not remembering the particular game now, if I wrote that previously regarding Sawchuk and Gamble alternating in the same game...
Apropos of nothing - I'm sure I'm not the first to do this, but I am declaring myself well and truly free of the "Kessel trade" debate. Enough is enough. We can't predict the future, and sure the Bruins got some good players, but boy the Leafs got an elite goal scorer, and through his own hard work and the team's good coaching he is becoming a better and better player. I can't see what more Kessel could have done to make this a good trade, he has really delivered the goods. Not all trades need a winner and a loser. Looking at this as a Leaf fan, I am very happy Burke made this trade, and I'm also very happy to watch Phil in a Leaf uniform. There, I said it! :-) Mike
I am a massive fan of yoursand Matteo's. I love the pod cast and folloe both of you guys on twitter. I respect you, your opinion and your writing SO very much. I do a little bit of amature writing myself about the Leafs and I have been getting a lot of possitive feed back. I am sending you my most recent article and it would be a huge honour for me if you read it and told me what you think. If you are too busy I completely understand, if not and you get a chance to read it please let me know what you think, and don't worry about hurting my feelings, crush them if you think it's bad.
- Finished 6th in league scoring in the 2011-12 Season.
- Has had scored 30 goals over 4 consecutive seasons including a career high 37 goals last season, and would have been five had this been a 82 game schedule this season. (Damn Lock out!)
- Has scored a point per game pace or higher the past two seasons
- Has not missed a single game in over 3 seasons
- Has 154 goals, 157 Assists for 311 points in his last 351 Games Played. (SPECIAL SIDE NOTE: Only 4 players have more points over that exact same time span; Crosby, Overchkin, Malkin and Mr. Steven Stamkos)
- And one of my personal favorites. In 2007 won the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy (for perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey) after battling testicular cancer, which he only missed 11 FREAKING GAMES after his surgury! Thats right, cancer, went after his boys, and Kessel won. Brings a tear to my eye when I think about it.
Vintage Leaf Memories has evolved since its launch in September of 2009. VLM began as a site almost exclusively about my memories as a Maple Leaf fan growing up in Ontario in the 1950s and into the ‘60s and ‘70s. I was born in 1953, and it was a golden era to grow up a Leaf fan, given their tremendous success under Punch Imlach in the 1960s.
I hope that the site will continue to grow! Thanks to everyone for their feedback.

Apologies if this was not the proper place to submit this. I enjoy the site, especially the stories about the "old days."
Cheers!

ReplyDeleteRe Gamble and Sawchuck
ReplyDeleteYes! I was sure the blurb stated that they alternated throughout the game, and that it was written by you.

ReplyDeleteYou're not alone, Michael. Check out what Mike Zeisberger from the Toronto Sun said on the latest "Leaf Matters"podcast. He seems to agree with you!
